Fewer and less have different meanings.
Fewer refers to people or things you can count; less refers to general amounts.
Here are two correctly written sentences:
- There are fewer children enrolled in preschool this year.
- Next time, please put less cream in my coffee.
Of course, I suppose you could say: Next time, please put fewer drops of cream in my coffee.
