Meritage (pronounced like heritage, not garage) is a wine crafted from designated Bordeaux grape varieties that include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, St. Macaire, Gros Verdot, and Carmenère for red wines and Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle du Bordelais for white Meritage wines.
In order to legitimately call a wine a Meritage, it must be (1) licensed by the Meritage Alliance and (2) comprised of at least two of the named grapes (above), with none making up more than 90% of the wine.
Is there a wine word you'd like defined? Tell me what it is and I'll feature it one Wednesday. Of course, I'll credit you with the suggestion.
Many thanks to Julie Hellard for this week's wine-word suggestion.
Cheers to you!
